Things to Do in Bideford, Devon — your perfect day, sorted

Real, curated ideas for Bideford — the Tarka Trail, the big family parks, the park and where to eat, filtered by who's actually with you.

Your Guide to Bideford, Devon

Bideford is a working market town on the Torridge rather than a beach resort, and its value to a family day out is that almost every big wet-weather attraction in north Devon is within twenty minutes of it. The Big Sheep, the Milky Way and the largest soft play in the region are all on its doorstep.

The town itself has a long quay, a medieval bridge and a Victorian park that is genuinely one of the best public parks in Devon — splash area, huge playground, sandpit, table tennis and board-game tables, all free. That park does more for a cheap day out than most paid attractions.

The Tarka Trail runs through here too, flat and traffic-free, and Instow with its sandy beach and the Boathouse is five minutes up the estuary. Bideford is the base rather than the destination, and it is a very good one.

The BIG Sheep

Day Out
★★★★☆ 4.5 (3,266)

Five minutes west — animal shows, a rollercoaster, indoor play, pedalos and lamb feeding in spring. The shows are the strong point and hold adults' attention too. Runs a reduced timetable outside school holidays and closes some weekdays, so check before setting off.

The Milky Way Adventure Park

Day Out
★★★★★ 4.6 (3,562)

Out past Clovelly and largely indoors, which makes it north Devon's most reliable wet-weather day. Rollercoasters, a train ride, sci-fi memorabilia, pottery painting, a magic show and an outdoor falconry display people rate as the best bit. Closed Mondays and Fridays.

World of Wonder Soft Play

Day Out
★★★★★ 4.8 (322)

At the Affinity outlet centre and reliably described as the cleanest soft play people have used — a genuinely good toddler section as well as an over-fives area, sensibly priced café, and staff who keep on top of it. Book a slot online. Closed Mondays.

Tarka Trail

Day Out
★★★★★ 4.6 (130)

The traffic-free railway path along the estuary — flat, paved, benched and genuinely accessible for wheelchairs and buggies as well as bikes. Stops for refreshments in either direction and good river views throughout. The best free family activity in north Devon.

Bideford Railway Heritage Centre

Day Out
★★★★☆ 4.2 (216)

A volunteer-run station on the Tarka Trail with a shunter, restored carriages, an open signal box and a café in one of the carriages. Small and charming; opening days are limited and the signage is not always current, so check before making a trip of it.

The Thatched Inn

Pub
★★★★★ 4.6 (1,739)

Village pub at Abbotsham, next to the Big Sheep, with covered outdoor booths that have heaters and fairy lights — a real advantage in Devon weather. Generous proper pub food, a good children's menu and a carvery. Dogs in the bar and outside, not the restaurant.

The Boathouse

Pub
★★★★☆ 4.5 (2,430)

Over at Instow facing the estuary, and the best-loved pub in the area — mussels people rate as the best in north Devon, lobster, good cocktails and sunsets over the water. Open from nine. Book for evenings, and ask for a table facing the beach.

The Mill Street Brasserie

Restaurant
★★★★★ 4.8 (129)

A tiny, beautifully decorated brasserie in town and the highest-rated proper dinner in Bideford — steak, seafood, good cocktails and a real wine list at prices that would be double in London. It seats very few, so booking is essential. Closed Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays.

Amalfi Bar and Cafe

Café
★★★★★ 4.8 (10)

A newer coffee house on the High Street, open from seven, spotless, dog friendly and noticeably cheaper than most — coffee around the £3.40 mark rather than £4. Small number of reviews so far but consistently good ones.
