Rainy Day in Bideford: What Is Worth Doing

2026-06-13·Bideford

Short answer: Bideford's value on a wet day is location: The Milky Way, The Big Sheep and the region's best soft play are all within fifteen minutes, each with its own parking. Check opening days first — two of the three close on certain weekdays.

The best wet-weather base in north Devon

Bideford is a working market town rather than a resort, and its worth to a family day out is that almost every big indoor attraction in the region is a short drive away. If it is raining anywhere between Woolacombe and Clovelly, this is where to point the car.

The three to know

The Milky Way Adventure Park, out past Clovelly, is largely indoors — rollercoasters, a train ride, sci-fi memorabilia, pottery painting, a magic show — which makes it north Devon's most reliable wet-day option. Closed Mondays and Fridays.

The Big Sheep is five minutes west with animal shows, indoor play and a rollercoaster. It runs a reduced timetable outside school holidays and reviewers repeatedly warn about turning up without checking.

World of Wonder Soft Play at the Affinity outlet centre is reliably described as the cleanest soft play in the region, with an excellent toddler section. Book a slot.

In town

The Bideford Railway Heritage Centre is a volunteer-run station on the Tarka Trail with a shunter and restored carriages, and you can get a coffee in one. Small, cheap, and a good half hour.

Victoria Park by the quay has a large playground — useful between showers rather than in a downpour.

And the wet-weather walk

The Tarka Trail is paved and traffic-free, which means no mud however wet it gets. Not sheltered, but a great deal easier underfoot than any coast path in November.

The trail stays mud-free whatever the weather — see how long the Tarka Trail takes.
