Short answer: Bideford is a working market town on the Torridge rather than a beach resort. Its value is location: nearly every big indoor attraction in north Devon is within fifteen minutes, and the Tarka Trail runs straight through it.
A working market town on the River Torridge, with a long quay and an old bridge — not a seaside resort. You do not come to Bideford for a beach. You come because of what is around it, and because it is cheaper and easier than the coast.
Almost every big indoor attraction in north Devon is within fifteen minutes: The Big Sheep, The Milky Way Adventure Park and World of Wonder soft play at the Affinity outlet centre. If it is raining anywhere between Woolacombe and Clovelly, point the car here.
Check opening days first — The Milky Way is closed Mondays and Fridays, and The Big Sheep runs a reduced timetable outside school holidays.
The flat, paved, traffic-free former railway runs straight through town along the estuary. Cycle hire is available, and the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre sits right on it with a café in a restored carriage.
Victoria Park by the quay has a large modern playground and a splash area — genuinely good, and free.
Westward Ho! and Northam Burrows are both minutes away, and Instow has a sandy beach across the estuary.
