Boxing Day in Bideford: A Free Park and a Flat Trail

2026-10-03·Bideford

Short answer: Victoria Park by the quay is free, open and has a large modern playground — useful on a day when children have new things to run off. The Tarka Trail runs straight through with no mud.

What is open regardless

Victoria Park and the Tarka Trail, both free. The park sits by the quay with a large modern playground, which on Boxing Day is worth more than it sounds — somewhere to put children who have been indoors since the 24th.

The Boxing Day walk

The trail

Flat, paved, traffic-free and benched, running along the Torridge estuary. No mud whatever December has thrown at it, and you can turn round whenever you like.

The quay and the bridge

A short loop along the quay and over the medieval bridge. Twenty minutes, level, and enough on a cold morning.

Where to eat

Ring before you set off. Boxing Day hours are decided late, change year to year, and are the single thing most likely to be wrong online. A two-minute call beats a wasted drive.

What will be shut

The Milky Way and The Big Sheep both close for the Christmas period, so do not plan an indoor day around them without ringing first. Normally they are the wet-weather answer here; on Boxing Day they are not.

Parking

Easier and cheaper than anywhere on the coast, and quieter still on Boxing Day. Aim for the quay.

If you want to eat out, book now rather than in December. The pubs that do serve on Boxing Day fill weeks ahead, and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
