Short answer: Budleigh is one of the most dog-friendly small towns in Devon. Brook Kitchen, Creedy's Corner, L'image and the Salterton Arms all take dogs, Bicton Park is dog friendly, and the beach has year-round dog zones marked by colour-coded signs.
Budleigh's beach operates year-round dog zones marked by colour-coded signs. It is a sensible system and worth reading on arrival rather than assuming — the sign tells you exactly which stretch you are on.
The estuary and wetland nature reserve at the eastern end of the beach are excellent for birds, and the path upriver towards Otterton is flat and easy. Keep dogs on leads near the reserve, where ground-nesting birds are a real issue.
Sixty-odd acres of gardens north of town — an Italian garden, a Victorian fernery, old trees and an adventure playground — and dog friendly. It is the obvious half-day out with a dog in this corner of Devon.
The Holt Bar and Terrace, overlooking the cricket field, is not listed as dog friendly.
Exmouth's eastern end near Orcombe Point allows dogs all year. Sidmouth, twenty minutes east, has the Anchor Inn and Milsons Point, both dog friendly.
