Budleigh Salterton Flat Access: With a Buggy or Wheelchair

2026-03-29·Budleigh Salterton

Short answer: Budleigh's beach is large smooth pebbles that no buggy or wheelchair will cross, but a paved promenade runs behind it. The River Otter path behind the beach is flat and easy. Bicton Park north of town is sixty acres of gardens.

Stay on the promenade

Budleigh Salterton's beach is a long crescent of large smooth pebbles under red sandstone cliffs. They are beautiful and they are impossible with wheels. The good news is that a paved promenade runs behind the beach, and that is where to be.

Budleigh Beach, the western sweep

The western end of the same beach, and the best sunset spot in town — it faces west. There is a hard-surfaced area here, which makes it a more manageable place to sit and watch than the pebbles.

The River Otter

The estuary and wetland nature reserve at the eastern end are excellent for birds, and the path upriver towards Otterton is flat and easy. This is the best accessible walk in Budleigh.

Bicton Park

Sixty-odd acres of gardens north of town — an Italian garden, a Victorian fernery, glasshouses, an adventure playground and duck feeding. It has its own parking. Ask on arrival about the best accessible routes, as with any large garden.

The High Street

Budleigh's High Street has several good cafés on reasonably level ground.

Practical

Budleigh is quiet and parking is rarely a fight, which helps if you need to park close.
