Chagford With a Toddler: What Actually Works

2026-10-17·Chagford

Short answer: Chagford's advantage with a small child is that everything is a minute from the square, so there is no long walk to anywhere. Stone Lane Gardens is very quiet and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Becky Falls has three trail options and animal talks, with a rocky path to the falls themselves.

The square is the whole point

Chagford is small enough that you park on the square and everything is a minute away. With a toddler that removes the thing that usually ruins a day out — the trek from the car to the thing, and the trek back when they have had enough. You can go back to the car for a nap and come out again.

Stone Lane Gardens

A tree nursery and garden with a summer sculpture trail, and the word people use about it is quiet. That is the appeal with a small child: nothing to break, nobody to disturb, space to wander. It is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, which is worth checking before you drive out.

Becky Falls

Three trail options so you can pick one that matches small legs, and animal talks included in the ticket, which gives you a sit-down with something happening. The path to the falls themselves is rocky and not a buggy route — the easier trails are the ones to take.

Castle Drogo

Immaculate gardens, and dogs are allowed outside the house. The approach from Fingle Bridge is a proper walk up rather than a stroll, so with a toddler drive to the house rather than walking up from the river.

What to leave for another year

Eating

The Old Forge does excellent breakfasts and a superb cream tea, and is closed Monday and Sunday. The Birdcage has tables outside, which is usually easier with a child, and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Between those two closures, check the day before you set out.

The practical warning

Chagford is on the moor edge and the lanes in are narrow and slow. Allow more time than the map suggests, particularly with a car seat to unload at the other end.
