Short answer: The Globe Inn does an outstanding Sunday roast with an excellent vegetarian option. The Old Forge is the breakfast and cream tea one, closed Monday and Sunday. The Birdcage does excellent scones with outdoor tables, closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Sunday roast is what Chagford is known for locally, and the vegetarian option is treated as a real dish rather than an afterthought. Rooms upstairs if you want to make an evening of it. Book for Sunday.
The village local, with good vegan options and rooms with views. Less of an occasion than the Globe and better for a straightforward lunch after a morning on the moor.
Excellent breakfasts and a superb cream tea — the one most people single out in a village that is unusually well served for its size. Closed Monday and Sunday.
Excellent scones and tables outside, which is the practical advantage on a dry day. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
For a village this small, the closures are unusually awkward. The Old Forge shuts Monday and Sunday; the Birdcage shuts Tuesday and Wednesday. There is no day when both are open. Decide which you want and travel on a day it is trading, rather than assuming a village with four good places will have one open.
Chagford is small and the moor-edge villages around it are smaller. The realistic fallback is driving to Moretonhampstead or Bovey Tracey, both of which are twenty minutes or so, rather than finding an alternative in the village itself.
In summer the square is a reasonable picnic spot and the moor is five minutes away. On a clear day, food bought in the village and eaten looking at Dartmoor beats any table.
