Boxing Day in Exmouth: Two Miles of Level Promenade

2026-10-09·Exmouth

Short answer: Two miles of flat, level promenade run behind the whole beach — the easiest Boxing Day walk in east Devon with a buggy or a wheelchair. The summer dog ban lifted on 1 October.

What is open regardless

The beach and the promenade, free and open. Exmouth's real advantage on a day like this is that the promenade is genuinely level for two miles, which very few Devon seafronts can claim.

The Boxing Day walk

The promenade

Two miles, flat the whole way. Suits a buggy, a wheelchair, or anyone who has eaten too much and wants to walk it off without climbing anything.

Orcombe Point

The eastern end of the beach and the official start of the Jurassic Coast, marked by the Geoneedle. The zigzag climb up gives you the estuary and the whole bay.

The Maer

Behind the seafront — a former golf links, so it drains well and never turns to mud. Useful when December has been wet.

Where to eat

Ring before you set off. Boxing Day hours are decided late, change year to year, and are the single thing most likely to be wrong online. A two-minute call beats a wasted drive.

One thing that does not change

The estuary currents at the western end are as dangerous in December as in July, and colder water gives you less time. Stay on the promenade side.

If you want to eat out, book now rather than in December. The places that do serve on Boxing Day fill weeks ahead, and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
