Exmouth in Winter: What's Open

2026-08-23·Exmouth

Short answer: Exmouth's summer dog ban lifts from October, turning two miles of flat sand into the easiest winter beach walk in Devon. The Point and the Grove both stay open. Check the River Exe Café's winter dates — a floating restaurant is inherently seasonal.

The dog ban lifts, and that is the headline

Exmouth bans dogs from its main beach between May and September. From October the whole two miles opens up, and with a flat, level promenade running behind the entire length it becomes the single easiest winter beach walk in Devon — genuinely straightforward with a buggy, a wheelchair or a dog.

What stays open

The Point at the marina opens at 8.30 and does a fisherman's brunch worth ordering, handles gluten-free properly, and has a dog station with blankets and treats — the sort of thing that matters more in December than August.

The Grove on the Esplanade is the big seafront pub with window tables facing the prom, water bowls throughout and a dog hydration keg outside. The Beach Pub near the marina is independent and reliable. Bath House has the best position in town for a drink.

The one to check

The River Exe Café is moored out in the estuary and reached by water taxi — the most memorable meal on this coast. It is also inherently seasonal, so check its winter operating dates before planning anything around it. Closed Mondays regardless.

Indoors

A la Ronde, the sixteen-sided National Trust house on the hill, is the wet-day option — genuinely strange, entirely indoors, with excellent volunteers. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and note there is no full café, just a cabin serving light bites.

World of Country Life at Sandy Bay has a large indoor museum alongside the outdoor attractions. Exeter is twenty minutes away for the cathedral, the underground passages and the free Red Coat tours.

Winter walks

One thing that does not change

The estuary currents at the western end are as dangerous in winter as in summer. The swimming warning does not lapse when the crowds go.

Winter opening is exactly where online listings are least reliable. Ring before you drive — several places in this guide show as closed on Google and answer the phone perfectly happily.
