Short answer: Exeter has more open on a cold November evening than anywhere else in Devon, and it is the rail hub for the whole county — so you can get there and back without driving. The quay and the cathedral green are the places to be.
Exeter is the one place in this guide where a November evening needs no planning around closures. The pubs, restaurants and shops are open, the streets are lit, and there is somewhere warm every few yards.
Exeter Round Table Fireworks, Westpoint — Saturday 7 November. Exeter's main display is out at Westpoint rather than in the city, and it is on the Saturday. Two smaller ones are within reach: Exminster Scouts at Deepway Green on Friday 6 November, and Woodbury Park on Friday 30 October.
Dates and times come from the organisers' own listings and the regional what's-on pages, checked in late October. Small displays are run by volunteers and can move or sell out, so confirm with the organiser before you travel — particularly for anything ticketed.

Exeter is the rail hub for Devon, with lines to Exmouth, Barnstaple, Okehampton, Plymouth and along the coast through Dawlish. On a night when the roads are busy and you might want a drink, that matters.
Exmouth is twenty-five minutes on the Avocet Line, with two miles of flat promenade facing the sea — a completely different kind of evening.
Bringing a dog to a display is rarely a good idea — see the guide to Bonfire Night with a nervous dog for what actually helps.
