Woolacombe Flat Access: Buggy and Wheelchair Friendly Beaches and Walks

Short answer: The Marine Drive promenade and the northern end of Woolacombe Beach are the flattest access. The Bull Point Lighthouse walk from Mortehoe is on a track rather than a cliff path and is the one headland route that works with a pram. Barricane, Grunta and Rockham all involve steps and are not viable.

The village is on a hill — start there

Woolacombe sits on a slope running down to the sand, and that shapes everything about access here. Anything approached from above involves a descent you have to reverse later. The flat ground is along the front, and that is where a buggy or wheelchair day works best.

Getting onto the beach

The northern end of Woolacombe Beach, nearest the village, has the most level approach — the ground by the stream and the beach entrances there are the gentlest on offer. Once you are on it, the beach is three miles of firm, flat sand at low tide, and firm wet sand is far more manageable with wheels than the soft dry sand higher up. Time a visit around a falling tide and the usable ground doubles.

Marine Drive above the beach is level for a good stretch and gives you the view down the whole bay without going onto the sand at all. The Porthole café sits on it with outdoor tables, which makes it the easiest sit-down-with-a-view stop in Woolacombe.

The one headland walk that works

Bull Point Lighthouse from the Mortehoe car park is about a mile and a half each way and, unusually for this coast, follows a track rather than a cliff path. That makes it the one headland route here people regularly do with a pram. It is not billiard-table flat — this is Devon — but it is a surface and a gradient you can push.

Morte Point, by contrast, is a beautiful walk and not a flat-access one. The path is uneven, the rock is sharp, and while there are benches at intervals, it is not a route to attempt with wheels.

Beaches to rule out

• Barricane — reached by a descent from the road above, and the parking is roadside. Not viable with wheels.
• Grunta — steps down to a rocky, uneven cove. No.
• Rockham — a walk from Mortehoe followed by a steep descent, and the steps down have been closed at times. Treat the clifftop viewpoint as the destination.
• Putsborough — has its own car park and steps down to the sand, so it depends entirely on your setup; check before committing to the drive.

Eating out

Drift Coffee House on Barton Road is the roomiest option in the village and will take a pram without making it a problem. The Captains Table has a long menu, long hours and level access from the street. The Jube has space inside, though the walk up from the front is a gradient.

Up in Mortehoe, Town Farmhouse and the Chichester Arms are both close to the car park, which matters more than the ground inside them.

The honest summary

Woolacombe is workable but not effortless. The front, the northern beach access and the Bull Point track give you a genuinely good day. The coves and the cliff paths do not, and no amount of determination changes that. Plan around the flat ground rather than trying to take on the hills, and the beach itself — three miles of firm sand at low tide — is as good an accessible beach as north Devon has.
