Short answer: The beach is three miles long and almost everyone stays in the first few hundred metres. Parking is all paid and gone by mid-morning in season. Dog rules are zoned rather than banned. And Mortehoe, up on the headland, is the half of Woolacombe most day visitors never see.
Three miles of west-facing sand. That number does not land until you are on it — walking from the village to the Putsborough end and back is a genuine two-hour outing, not a stroll. It also means the beach rarely feels full even when the car parks are, because almost everyone piles onto the first few hundred metres nearest the village.
The practical version: walk ten minutes down the sand from wherever you land and you will have more space than the people who got the good parking space.
There is no free parking in Woolacombe. The seafront and Marine Drive spaces go first and are usually gone by mid-morning on a hot day. The Esplanade car parks above the village hold out longer. If you are a National Trust member, the NT car park is free, which pays for a membership over a week's holiday.
The option most people miss: park up at Mortehoe, a mile north, and walk down. Downhill on the way in when everyone is fresh, and it very rarely fills at the same rate as the village.
Woolacombe does not simply ban dogs in summer. The beach is signed by zone with no-dog, on-lead and off-lead sections marked separately, with the stream near the village as the dividing line. Read the signs on arrival.
This is the half of Woolacombe day visitors miss entirely. The older village on the headland has the museum, two pubs, the cream teas, and the walk out to Morte Point where seals sit on the rocks below for most of the year. It is also the answer when the beach is too windy, too crowded or too wet.
