Short answer: The Pig & Whistle at Littlehempston is the best-rated place to eat in the Totnes area — an old beamed country pub worth the short drive. In town, the Steam Packet is on the quay and Bruto Lounge is the all-day option.
The Pig & Whistle at Littlehempston, just outside town — an old beamed country pub with a long menu and daily specials, and the best-rated place to eat in the area. The one to book for a Sunday.
The Steam Packet Inn on St Peter's Quay has outdoor tables right by the Dart and a cosy interior for winter, with a well-regarded Sunday roast. The Waterside Bistro on the Plains is open ten till ten every day and is good with young children — clean baby changing and a welcoming attitude.
Bruto Lounge on the Plains is a comfortable, quirky all-day café bar with a careful allergy menu, live music some nights and good coffee. Order at the table by QR code, which helps if you have children with you.
The River Shack at Stoke Gabriel quay does breakfasts and wood-fired pizzas by the water, and is a lovely spot as the evening light goes.
The Steam Packet, the Pig & Whistle, Bruto Lounge, the Waterside Bistro and the River Shack all take dogs. Totnes is a good town with one.
The steam railway station car park is around £7.50 and there is free parking on the nearby industrial estate. The flat ground with the good places to eat is down on the Plains by the river — the High Street is a proper climb.
Small Devon restaurants have small dining rooms. Book at weekends and always for Sunday lunch, and ring rather than relying on a booking form out of season.
