Short answer: The Anchor Inn is the best pub in Sidmouth — order the fish pie. Milsons Point on the High Street does the best breakfast in town. The Clock Tower sits in the free clifftop gardens with sea views from the tables.
The Anchor Inn, in the middle of town rather than on the front, with a beer garden that stays cooler than the esplanade in summer. Dog friendly, and the fish pie is the order.
Milsons Point on the High Street — steak and eggs, thoughtful vegetarian options, and the best brunch in town. Dog friendly, and worth booking at weekends.
An esplanade café and bistro with inside and outside seating facing the sea, and a set two-course menu. Strong on gluten-free.
Inside Connaught Gardens, the free clifftop gardens above the town, with sea views from the tables and dogs allowed downstairs. Closed Tuesdays. The gardens themselves are the best place in Sidmouth to sit with a view, and they cost nothing.
The Anchor, Milsons Point and the Clock Tower's downstairs all take dogs. Sidmouth is a gentle town for a dog walk — the esplanade is level and Connaught Gardens are well kept all year.
Beer is fifteen minutes east: Steamers for seafood, and the Anchor Inn there has a cliff-top garden with the best view in the village. The Masons Arms at Branscombe is a thatched inn on the clifftop walk.
Devon's good rooms are small rooms. Book at weekends and always for Sunday lunch, and ring rather than trusting a booking form out of season.
