Sidmouth at Christmas: The Lights Switch On and What Stays Open

Short answer: Sidmouth in December is a genteel Regency town with almost nobody in it. Connaught Gardens stay free and open, the Anchor Inn is the pub, and Beer Quarry Caves twenty minutes east are open year-round at a constant eight degrees.

Quiet, and rather good for it

Sidmouth is the most genteel seaside town in Devon and December suits it. White Regency hotels along the esplanade, red cliffs behind, independent shops, no arcades and almost nobody about. If you find Devon's summer resorts exhausting, this is the winter antidote.

The lights

A modest town switch-on along the esplanade and the High Street. It is a local evening rather than a destination event, and Sidmouth's charm is not really the sort that lights improve. The town looks best on a bright cold afternoon.

Connaught Gardens

The clifftop gardens above Jacob's Ladder are free to walk around all year and are the best place in Sidmouth to sit with a view. The Clock Tower café inside them has sea views from the tables, home-made cakes and allows dogs downstairs. Closed Tuesdays.

What stays open

• The Anchor Inn in the middle of town — the best pub in Sidmouth, dog friendly, order the fish pie.
• Milsons Point on the High Street — the best breakfast in town, dog friendly, book at weekends.
• The Pea Green Boat on the esplanade — inside seating facing the sea, strong gluten-free.
• The Clock Tower in Connaught Gardens — closed Tuesdays.

The wet-day answer is twenty minutes east

Sidmouth has very little indoors, and the honest solution in December is Beer Quarry Caves. Roman-era underground stone quarries on a ninety-minute guided tour, open year-round, consistently the best-rated attraction in east Devon. It is eight degrees down there whatever the season — which in December means it is warmer than outside.

Phone ahead for tour times rather than turning up. Seaton Tramway, a little further on, runs covered trams through the winter and is the other reliable option.

The winter beach

Check the tide, as always here — much of the beach is submerged at high water. Weston Beach east of town is empty in December, which is saying something for a beach that is empty in August, but the twenty to thirty minute descent is steep and slippery in winter.

A safety note that matters more now

The red cliffs at Sidmouth are actively unstable and wet weather makes rock falls more likely, not less. Sections of Jacob's Ladder beach have been fenced off after landslips. Keep well away from the cliff base wherever it is signed.
