Totnes Parking: The £7.50 Trap and the Free Car Park Nearby

2026-07-26·Updated 2 Oct 2026·Totnes

Short answer: Totnes is a hill town and the main car parks sit below it, so expect a climb up to the castle end. The steam railway station car park is around £7.50 — there is free parking on the nearby industrial estate instead.

The town is on a hill

Totnes runs uphill from the river to the castle, and the main car parks are down at the bottom near the Plains and the quay. That is fine going up and easy coming back, but worth knowing before you park at the wrong end with a buggy.

The £7.50 trap

This is the one worth knowing. The steam railway station car park is around £7.50, and there is free parking on the nearby industrial estate a short walk away. Visitors report this repeatedly, and it makes a real difference if you are doing the Rare Breeds Farm, which is reached through the station.

Where to aim

The riverside car parks near the Plains put you next to the Steam Packet Inn, the Waterside Bistro and Bruto Lounge, with the High Street climbing up from there. Totnes Castle is at the top of the town with limited pay-and-display about 64 metres away, suitable for cars only — most people park in the main town car parks and walk up.

Arriving by train

Totnes is on the mainline, which makes the parking question optional. It is also where the South Devon Railway runs from and where the river boats go down to Dartmouth, so a car-free day here works better than most Devon towns.

Practical

On the station car park specifically, see station car parks in Devon.
