Rainy Day in Bovey Tracey: Waterfalls Improve in the Wet

2026-10-02·Bovey Tracey

Short answer: Waterfalls are the one attraction that improves when it pours, and there are two within reach. The woodland at Yarner Wood gives real shelter, and 3 Sixty in the town centre has sofas and a magazine floor upstairs.

Waterfalls get better

Becky Falls

A woodland park with three waymarked trails down to the waterfall, plus animal talks under cover — meerkats among them. More water means more waterfall, so a wet week is the right time.

Canonteign Falls

England's highest man-made waterfall, in a valley with a fern garden, lakes and a play area. Same logic: it is at its best after rain.

Trees are shelter

East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve at Yarner Wood is ancient woodland with grassy glades, a river and a hide, and four car parks. Woodland takes a surprising amount of rain out of a walk, and it is far kinder underfoot than open moor in winter.

Wistman's Wood out on the high moor is extraordinary in mist — stunted oaks covered in rare mosses — but it is a proper moorland walk with no shelter and no easy exit.

Where to sit it out

Check before you drive

Several Dartmoor attractions cut their hours sharply in January and February and some close completely. Ring rather than assume, particularly midweek.
