Plymouth With a Toddler: What Actually Works

2026-10-03·Plymouth

Short answer: Devil's Point gives you three hours free parking, accessible paths and benches, and water to look at. The Box is free and closed Mondays. The National Marine Aquarium is the paid one worth doing because the ticket gives free re-entry for a year — closed Wednesdays.

Devil's Point is the easy win

Three hours of free parking in a city is reason enough, and what you get for it is accessible paths, benches at intervals and the Sound right in front of you. There is sea swimming access for the brave. With a toddler it works because you can arrive, walk as far as they will tolerate, sit down, and leave without having paid for anything.

The free indoor one

The Box is free to enter and has a 4D history film that holds small attention spans better than a gallery does. It is closed on Mondays, which is worth knowing before you drive in. On a wet Tuesday it is the best few hours in the city with a small child and it costs nothing.

The paid one that is worth it

The National Marine Aquarium is the UK's largest and the ticket includes free re-entry for a year. That changes the maths completely with a toddler: you are not obliged to extract four hours of value in one visit. Go for ninety minutes, leave when it turns, come back next month. It is closed on Wednesdays.

The Mayflower Museum

Small — an hour or so — and aimed at younger children, with storytelling that handles a complicated history in a balanced way. The size is the feature rather than a limitation when you are working around a nap.

What to skip

Eating

Pier One opens at 7am every day, has a log burner and sea views, and is popular with dog walkers — which usually means it is relaxed about noise. The Waterfront is right on the water with some free parking and opens from 9am. Both beat trying to get a buggy into a busy Barbican restaurant at one o'clock.

Parking honestly

Barbican parking is expensive. Devil's Point gives three hours free and Royal William Yard has good parking. With a toddler, those two are the ones to build the day around rather than paying city-centre rates for the privilege of pushing over cobbles.
