Lynton and Lynmouth With a Toddler

2026-06-12·Lynton and Lynmouth

Short answer: The cliff railway is a ride in itself for a toddler. Glen Lyn Gorge has enormous water jets children can operate. The Valley of Rocks has wild goats and an easy level path. The catch is the steep terrain everywhere else.

Be ready for the hills

Lynmouth is at the harbour and Lynton is five hundred feet above it. Almost everything involves a gradient. A sling or a back carrier will do more for you here than a buggy.

The cliff railway

A water-powered funicular, running since 1890, climbing between the villages in about two minutes. To a toddler it is a ride, not transport — and it saves the steep road.

Glen Lyn Gorge

Waterfalls, a hydro-power exhibition and enormous water jets that children can operate themselves. Pressing buttons that make water go whoosh is peak toddler entertainment. Steep in places, and cash only.

The Valley of Rocks

Wild goats wander freely, which toddlers love. There is an easy level path through the valley as well as the higher routes, so you get the goats without a climb.

Eating

The Greenhouse in Lynton is open nine till nine, with scones baked on site. The Ancient Mariner in Lynmouth is down on the flat by the harbour.

Bring cash

Glen Lyn Gorge and Watersmeet's nearer car park are cash only, with patchy phone signal.
