Kingsbridge at Christmas: What's Open

2026-08-25·Updated 23 Oct 2026·Kingsbridge

Short answer: Kingsbridge is where the whole South Hams does its Christmas shopping, and it eats better than a town this size should. Verse is the best restaurant in the area, the Crabshell sits on the quay, and there is a long-stay car park right beside it.

The 2026 dates

Kingsbridge Celebrates Christmas is on Saturday 5 December, on Fore Street. The grotto is free.

Checked against the organisers' listings in late October. Smaller events are run by volunteers and can move, so confirm before travelling.

The town the South Hams shops in

Kingsbridge sits at the head of its own estuary and is the market town the whole area runs through. In December that makes it busy in the way a working town is busy, rather than empty like the coastal villages around it.

The lights

Fore Street and the quay carry them, with the estuary alongside. The quay is the better half — the water doubles the lights, and the Crabshell Inn sits right on it.

2026 dates: switch-on evenings and market dates are confirmed by town councils and organisers through October and November, and they move year to year. Check the town council or chamber of commerce listing before travelling rather than relying on last year's date.

What stays open

Parking is the easy bit

The long-stay car park right by the quay is more parking than anywhere else in this corner of Devon. On a December shopping trip that matters, and it is also why people base themselves here and take the bus to Salcombe.

The winter walk

Slapton Ley, twenty minutes away, has bird hides and waterside paths — and hides are shelters, so it works in weather. Free parking at the memorial car park.

What to leave for spring

Start Point and Bolberry Down. Both are exposed clifftop walks with no shelter, and Start Point is a three-quarter mile track down to the lighthouse and back up.

Book Christmas and Boxing Day lunch in November. Devon's good pubs fill weeks ahead and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
