Short answer: The Friendly Fork Kitchen on the Back Beach lets you eat out on the sand, which beats any beer garden. Across the ferry, the Ferry Boat Inn runs an outdoor grill at weekends. The Den promenade has a children's play area and skate park on it.
A word on what to expect. Devon coastal pubs very rarely have playgrounds in the way inland family pubs do — the buildings are old, the sites are small and the land is expensive. What they have instead is a beer garden, a beach or a public play area within sight. That is usually enough, but it is worth knowing before you drive somewhere expecting a climbing frame.
On the Back Beach, and the pick here. You can eat indoors in the pub or take the food out onto the sand, which with children is worth more than any play equipment. Crab sandwiches, burgers, pizza, loaded fries and fish goujons — reviewers describe visiting as a family with a nine and thirteen-year-old and a dog and getting excellent service every time.
One reviewer's child rates the pizza as the best they have ever eaten, which is the sort of endorsement that matters.
The oldest pub in Teignmouth, a couple of minutes from the Back Beach, doing fish and chips and Sunday roasts at fair prices. Quaint and friendly, and open until half eleven. Reviewers note meals sometimes arrive at different times, which is worth knowing with a table of four.
The Ferry Boat Inn on the Strand runs an outdoor grill at weekends doing burgers cooked to order, including well-regarded vegan ones, and lets you take food and drinks onto the beach for a picnic. Live music at weekends. It is the easiest family meal on this stretch.
The London Inn on the green is the village pub, dog friendly, with outdoor seating overlooking the bowling green and a good catch of the day.
Seafront parking runs to around £4.60 for two hours; the Back Beach car park is larger and cheaper. Much of the pier is fenced off, so do not plan around it.
Book if you are more than four, and book for Sunday lunch anywhere on this list. Devon pubs fill and the ones with gardens fill first on a sunny day.
