The Back Beach on the estuary side is the one to know — dog friendly, sheltered from the wind that hits the seafront, with working boats hauled up on the sand and a large car park behind. It is the side locals prefer anyway and the Shaldon ferry runs from it.
Ness Cove, across the river at Shaldon and reached through the Smugglers' Tunnel cut down through the cliff, is dog friendly all year round with no seasonal restrictions. Red sand and stones, big clam shells and cormorants offshore. No facilities on the beach itself, and it is not buggy or wheelchair accessible.
Brunch on Triangle Place is dog friendly and does the best breakfast in town — eggs benedict, good coffee and a separate gluten-free menu with real choice. Closes at three. Reviewers consistently mention the owners as the reason they come back.
Halulu on the promenade is tiki-styled with a patio, good cocktails and banh mi worth ordering, and is dog friendly. It stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, which makes it the late option here.
The Friendly Fork Kitchen down on the Back Beach is good with children and dogs, doing crab sandwiches, burgers and pizza that you can eat inside or out on the sand. The View at the Pavilions has upper-deck seating with the best sea view on the front.
The Ferry Boat Inn on the Strand runs an outdoor grill at weekends and lets you take food and drinks onto the beach — the easiest dog-friendly meal on this stretch. The Clipper is the big all-day place with a large outdoor area and no booking needed.
Shaldon Wildlife Trust, the small zoo by the tunnel entrance, does not take dogs. If that is on the plan, work out who is holding the lead outside.
