Exmouth Without a Car: Train, Bus and Walking It

2026-05-08·Exmouth

Short answer: Exmouth is the end of a branch line from Exeter, which makes it one of the easiest beach days in Devon without a car. The station is a short walk from the seafront, and two miles of flat sand with a level promenade behind it does the rest.

The easiest beach day in Devon by train

Exmouth sits at the end of the Avocet Line from Exeter, running down the estuary with views across the water for much of the way. It is a short journey, it is frequent, and it delivers you into a town with two miles of flat sand at the end of it.

For a car-free family beach day in Devon, nothing else in this guide comes close for simplicity.

What you can walk to

Almost everything. The station is a short walk from the seafront, and from there the promenade runs flat and level for the whole two miles — genuinely easy with a buggy or a wheelchair, which matters when you cannot park nearby.

The one thing to know

Do not swim near the estuary mouth at the western end. The currents there run hard and it is genuinely unsafe — there are signs. Stick to the lifeguarded middle section, which is a short walk from the station anyway.

By bus

Sandy Bay, east of town, is a blue-flag beach where the access runs through the Devon Cliffs holiday park — reviewers note the bus that stops nearby is the simplest way in, which makes it easier without a car than with one. World of Country Life is in the same direction.

Budleigh Salterton, ten minutes east by road, is the quiet alternative to Exmouth and is on the bus route.

Bus timetables in Devon thin out sharply from October and change between summer and winter. Check the operator's current timetable before you plan a day around a connection rather than trusting an old printout or an app that has not refreshed.

And into Exeter

The line runs back into Exeter in half an hour, which means a wet morning at the cathedral, the underground passages or a free Red Coat tour, and an afternoon on the beach. Very few Devon towns let you do that.
