Dawlish at Christmas: What's Open

2026-08-21·Updated 23 Oct 2026·Dawlish

Short answer: Dawlish is one of the few Devon towns that is better in winter: waves breaking over the sea wall as the trains come through. The Smugglers Inn does a daily carvery in three portion sizes, and Sola at the Warren stays open.

The 2026 dates

Dawlish switches its lights on, on Saturday 21 November, on The Strand and after a lantern parade through the town.

Checked against the organisers' listings in late October. Smaller events are run by volunteers and can move, so confirm before travelling.

Winter suits Dawlish

Most Devon seaside towns shrink in December. Dawlish gets better, because its main attraction is Brunel's railway running along the beach — and in a winter swell the waves break clean over the sea wall as the trains come through.

People drive here specifically to watch it. It is free, the promenade is level, and the station sits right on the seafront if it turns properly foul.

The lights and the swans

The lights run through the town centre along the Strand and around the stream, where the black swans have been for decades. Ducks, swans and lights on the water in the middle of a town is an unusually pleasant twenty minutes.

2026 dates: switch-on evenings and market dates are confirmed by town councils and organisers through October and November, and they move year to year. Check the town council or chamber of commerce listing before travelling rather than relying on last year's date.

What stays open

Safety in a storm

Stay behind the wall rather than on it, and never turn your back on the sea. Waves are not evenly sized and the big ones arrive without warning. In a severe storm, watch from the station or from further back.

Winter walks

The sea wall south to Coryton Cove is half a mile, level and sheltered at the far end. Dawlish Warren north is a long sandy spit, and the quieter stretch towards the reserve is empty in December.

Book Christmas and Boxing Day lunch in November. Devon's good pubs fill weeks ahead and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
