Short answer: Take the Tarka Line from Exeter to Barnstaple, then a bus out towards Croyde and Saunton. The village is tiny and entirely walkable. The catch is the timetable — services thin out sharply off-season, so check before you plan a day around it.
No station at Croyde. Barnstaple is the nearest, at the end of the Tarka Line from Exeter, and buses run out from there towards Braunton, Saunton and Croyde. Braunton is the larger village on the way and a useful interchange.
Bus timetables in Devon thin out sharply from October and change between summer and winter. Check the operator's current timetable before you plan a day around a connection rather than trusting an old printout or an app that has not refreshed.
This is the thing to know before committing. Croyde is a small village on narrow lanes and the bus service reflects that — reasonable in summer, thin from October, and thinner on Sundays. If you are visiting out of season without a car, check the last bus back before you settle in at the pub.
Croyde is one thatched street. Everything — the pubs, the cafés, the surf shops, the beach — is within a few minutes on foot of wherever the bus drops you. There is no part of Croyde that needs a car once you are in it.
The quiet end of the Woolacombe sands is approached through Georgeham on single-track lanes and is effectively car-only. You can walk to it along the sand from Woolacombe at low tide, but that is a three-mile beach walk in each direction rather than a casual detour.
Croyde's parking is paid, finite and fills by mid-morning on any hot day, and the machine does not reliably take cards. Arriving by bus removes the worst part of a Croyde day entirely — and the lanes in are narrow enough that being driven rather than driving is a pleasanter experience anyway.
