Croyde's one genuine advantage over Woolacombe is that everything is close together. The beach car parks sit near the sand, the village is a single street, and you are not facing the long walk that its neighbours involve. With a two-year-old and a bag of kit, that matters more than the size of the beach.

The surf is the thing to watch

Be clear-eyed about this. Croyde produces the most reliable waves in north Devon and that is exactly why people come. The shore break can knock a toddler off their feet, and reviewers note the waves can be rough and the tide comes in fast. Stay in the shallows, stay with them, and use the lifeguarded area in season.

If the sea is up, Saunton Sands five minutes south is the gentler beach — three miles of open sand with a shallower gradient and much more room.

The tide is your friend

Croyde's tide goes a very long way out, which roughly doubles the beach and leaves shallow warm pools behind. Those pools are safer, warmer and more interesting to a toddler than the sea, and they are the reason to time your visit for low water.

Time the beach around a falling tide. Firm wet sand is far easier to push a buggy across than soft dry sand, and shallow pools left behind by the receding water are safer and warmer than the sea itself.

Eating with a pram

Cafe Croyde Bay above the bay has its own parking, level access and generous all-day breakfasts — the practical choice. The Thatch is the best pub in the village with children, though it is a warren of small rooms and tight with a pram; go early or sit outside. Billy Budds has a large garden at the back with plenty of room to park a buggy.

What will not work

• Putsborough — its own car park, but steps down to the sand.
• Baggy Point's clifftop route — narrow and close to the edge. The lower inland path is the option.
• The Hideout's rooftop terrace — good fun, not a pram destination.

When it rains
