Croyde in Winter: What's Open

2026-08-17·Croyde

Short answer: The pubs keep going — The Thatch, Billy Budds and the Manor House Inn all run through the winter. The surf is bigger than in summer and the schools still operate. Croyde's summer dog restrictions do not apply from October.

A one-street village in January

Croyde in August is overwhelming and in January it is almost silent. The surf shops reduce hours, the beach cafés cut back, and the lanes that take twenty minutes to clear in summer are empty. Whether that is a loss depends entirely on what you came for.

The surf is the winter draw

This is the thing people miss. Croyde produces the most reliable waves in north Devon and the winter swells are bigger than the summer ones. Surf schools run outside the season, and the observation one reviewer makes about a neighbouring beach holds here too — surfing in poor weather is good fun because you do not notice the rain.

Wetsuit thickness matters more than the forecast. If you are hiring, say it is winter when you book.

What stays open

The pubs, which is what counts. The Thatch is effectively the centre of the village — small rooms, live music, big portions, and it keeps going. Billy Budds has a covered area and handmade pizzas. The Manor House Inn at the top of the village does a Sunday carvery worth planning around; book if you are bringing a dog.

Cafe Croyde Bay above the bay is dog friendly with all-day breakfasts, and has a sauna and cold plunge next door — a considerably better winter proposition than a summer one.

The dog rules lift

Croyde restricts dogs over the summer and those restrictions do not apply in winter, which turns the bay into one of the better dog beaches in north Devon for six months. Saunton, five minutes south, allows dogs all year regardless.

The winter walk

Baggy Point in a big sea beats Baggy Point in July. A full loop is about two and a half miles with Lundy visible on a clear day, and there is a lower inland path if the cliff edge in a gale does not appeal. The car park is £10, free for National Trust members.

Practical

Winter opening is exactly where online listings are least reliable. Ring before you drive — several places in this guide show as closed on Google and answer the phone perfectly happily.
