Brixham With a Toddler: What Actually Works

2026-03-15·Brixham

Short answer: The breakwater is half a mile of flat level walkway and the best pram walk on this coast. The harbour with the boats and the Golden Hind is free entertainment. Brixham's coves all involve steps, so do not plan a beach day here with a buggy.

Be honest about the beaches

Brixham has no beach you can push a buggy onto. Fishcombe involves a steep hill, St Mary's Bay is over a hundred steps down with only one way off, and Man Sands is three miles of lane then an uneven mile on foot. If a beach day with a toddler is the plan, go round to Paignton or Torquay.

What Brixham does have is one of the best flat walks in Devon and a harbour that entertains small children for free.

The breakwater

Half a mile of smooth, level walkway built on granite boulders, with a low wall on the seaward side and benches along it. Reviewers describe it as an easy flat walk, doable for those with mobility difficulties — which means a pram goes along it without any trouble at all.

Seals come close in more often than not, the water is clear enough to see down to the rocks, and there is a lighthouse at the end. Paid parking, and the spaces are narrow.

The harbour

A working fishing port with trawlers landing, the Golden Hind replica moored in the middle and coloured houses stacked up the hillside. It is free, it is level around the quayside, and there is always something moving. For a two-year-old that is a genuinely good hour.

Berry Head

You can drive to the top and park next to the Guardhouse Café, which puts you beside the fort ruins and the views with almost no walking. The reserve is free and the café is rated as highly as the reserve itself. Much better than attempting the coast path walk out from town with a buggy.

Timing and practicalities

Harbour parking is tight and the three-hour car parks fill fast, so arrive early. Public toilets around the harbour charge 30p. And if the weather turns, Torquay's indoor options are fifteen minutes away.
