Brixham in Winter: What's Open

2026-08-12·Brixham

Short answer: Brixham is a working port, so the fleet lands through the winter and the seafood is as good in January as July. The harbour pubs stay open. The breakwater is free, flat and dramatic in a swell.

The fleet does not stop

This is the practical advantage of a working port over a resort. The trawlers land through the winter, the fish market keeps operating, and the seafood in the restaurants is unchanged. Rockfish on the fish quay is still serving what came in that morning.

It also means the harbour is busy at hours when nowhere else is, which makes a December visit feel like a place going about its business rather than a resort waiting for spring.

What stays open

The winter walk

The breakwater. Half a mile of flat, level walkway out to a lighthouse, built in the 1840s specifically to take the weather, with benches along it and seals close in. In a December swell it is one of the better free things to do in Devon, and it is easy going for anyone with mobility difficulties.

Berry Head is the other one — free, with Napoleonic fort ruins, Britain's shortest lighthouse and the Guardhouse Café, which reviewers rate as highly as the reserve itself.

What gets harder

St Mary's Bay's free car park is still free, but the hundred-plus steps down are slippery in winter and the walk in through grassland gets muddy. Treat the clifftop as the destination. Man Sands is best left until spring — three miles of lane and an uneven mile on foot is no fun in the wet.

Storm watching

Brixham is one of the better places in Devon for it. The breakwater in a decent blow is superb, though not in a genuinely severe storm. Berry Head gives you the length of the bay from high ground behind fort walls.

Practical

Harbour parking is tight year-round but far easier in December. Public toilets charge 30p.

Winter opening is exactly where online listings are least reliable. Ring before you drive — several places in this guide show as closed on Google and answer the phone perfectly happily.
