Rock Pooling Near Brixham for Kids: The Best Spots and the Tide

Short answer: Fishcombe Cove is the easy one, a short coastal walk from the harbour with a café and toilets. St Mary's Bay has clear calm water and plenty of rocks, but it is over a hundred steps down. Man Sands is the wild option and a proper walk in.

Coves, not beaches

Brixham has no sweep of sand and that is exactly why the rock pooling is good. The coast here is limestone coves on the edge of a UNESCO geopark, and the water is clear enough to see into. The trade is that most of them involve steps.

Fishcombe Cove

The easy option. A small hidden bay a short coastal walk from the harbour through the Battery Gardens, with a beach café and toilets on site. Reviewers describe a gorgeous little bay that is hard to believe is in England, often with nobody else there. Dog friendly. The hill down is steep but short.

St Mary's Bay

The better pooling and the harder access. A long secluded bay under high cliffs with very clear calm water, plenty of rocks to climb and explore, and — reviewers mention it repeatedly — excellent stones for skimming. Seals sometimes come into the bay and will swim up to people.

It is over a hundred steep steps down with only one way on and off the beach. Check the tide before you commit, because half the beach disappears at high water and there is no alternative exit.

Man Sands

The remote one. Three miles of single-track lane, a National Trust car park, then an uneven mile on foot. Reviewers describe it as quite pebbly with lots of rocks for rock pooling, plus a stream running across the beach to the sea. No facilities at all.

Better reached as the end of a coast path walk from Brixham than as a drive.

Timing

Rock pooling only works on a falling tide. Aim to arrive about two hours before low water and work outwards as the sea drops — that way the pools furthest out, which nobody has disturbed, are the ones you reach last. Check the tide table before you set off rather than guessing.

What to take

• A clear plastic tub rather than a net — you can see into it and it does not damage anything.
• Beach shoes or old trainers. Barefoot on wet rock ends badly.
• A small net is fine for shrimp, but hands and patience catch more.
• Something to sit on. The best pools reward waiting rather than poking.
• Sun cream even in cloud — you will be out on open rock for an hour.

The rules

• Put every rock back exactly as you found it. That is somebody's roof.
• Look, do not lift. Anemones and limpets come off badly.
• Return everything to the pool you took it from, not a different one.
• Never turn your back on the sea, and know when the tide turns.
• Beadlet anemones can sting soft skin — fine on fingertips, not on the inside of an arm.

The flat alternative

If the steps rule the coves out, the breakwater is half a mile of level walkway with clear water either side and seals close in — not rock pooling, but the same interest in what is under the surface, and genuinely accessible.
