Boxing Day in Totnes: A Free Garden and a River Walk

2026-10-14·Totnes

Short answer: Leechwell Garden is a free community garden behind the town with wooden climbing equipment and a sandpit — useful on a day when children need running off. The Plains by the river are the flat ground.

What is open regardless

Leechwell Garden and the riverside, both free. Totnes is eight miles inland at the tidal limit, so it does not take the weather the coast does — which on an unpredictable Boxing Day is worth something.

The Boxing Day walk

The river

The Plains and the quays beside the Dart. Flat, which matters here because Totnes climbs steeply everywhere else.

Leechwell Garden

A free community garden tucked behind the town, with wooden climbing equipment, a sandpit and a shallow stream. The answer if the party includes children who have been indoors since the 24th.

The hill

Up the High Street to the castle for the view over the valley. The castle itself closes in winter, but the climb and the view cost nothing.

Where to eat

Ring before you set off. Boxing Day hours are decided late, change year to year, and are the single thing most likely to be wrong online. A two-minute call beats a wasted drive.

Stay low

The flat ground is the Plains by the river, which is also where most of the good places to eat are. With a buggy and a full stomach, do not fight the hill.

Parking

The steam railway station car park is around £7.50 in normal weeks, and there is free parking on the nearby industrial estate — worth knowing even on a quiet day.

If you want to eat out, book now rather than in December. The places that do serve on Boxing Day fill weeks ahead, and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
