Short answer: Tavistock's Christmas market fills the Victorian pannier market hall in the middle of town — indoors, which matters in December on the edge of Dartmoor. Park at The Meadows and walk in. 2026 dates are confirmed by the organisers through autumn.
Most Christmas markets in Devon are rows of stalls in a wet square. Tavistock's advantage is the Pannier Market — a huge covered Victorian hall in the middle of town that runs Tuesday to Saturday all year, with a different theme most days. In December that becomes a proper indoor Christmas market, which on the western edge of Dartmoor is not a small thing.
The town around it is a handsome stannary town built on tin and then copper, so the setting does a lot of the work.
There are three separate things in December and people often mix them up: the one-day festival, the fortnight of Butchers Hall markets, and the Pannier Market's normal trading. The confirmed 2026 dates are below.
The Meadows is the obvious answer — a large free park between the River Tavy and the Tavistock Canal, with a zip wire, playground and BMX pump track. It is a short walk into the centre and it costs nothing, which on a market day beats circling the town car parks.
If you have children with you, the playground is a useful reward for being dragged round stalls.
The Cornish Arms does near-Michelin cooking at pub prices and takes dogs in the bar. The Annex on Drake Road is the highest-rated restaurant in this guide. Granito Lounge on Brook Street is open nine till late and serves food until ten, which is unusual in a moorland town in winter.
The market hall is the point — it is indoors. Beyond that, Tavistock's shops and cafés are close together, and Lydford Gorge is better in rain than most walks, though steep and slate underfoot.
Tavistock Christmas Festival — Sunday 6 December 2026, 10am to 3.30pm. It runs across Butchers Hall, the Pannier Market and Bedford Square, with over 70 artisan, handmade and independent gift exhibitors, local choirs, street food and mulled wine. Entry is free.
Butchers Hall Christmas Markets — 11 to 23 December 2026. Open weekdays 9am to 4pm, Saturdays 9am to 4.30pm and Sundays 10am to 3pm, so this is the one to aim for if the festival Sunday does not suit.
Warm Up To Christmas Market — 7 November 2026, run by Diverse Events, for anyone who likes to start early.
The Pannier Market itself opens 9am to 4pm, with a different market each day and the Charter Market on Fridays. Dates were confirmed by Tavistock Town Council and the festival organisers; check their listings again close to the day in case anything shifts.
