Shaldon at Christmas: What's Open

2026-08-31·Shaldon

Short answer: Shaldon sits on the sheltered estuary side, so it holds up better than the open coast in December. The London Inn on the green, the Ferry Boat Inn and the Clipper all stay open, and Ness Cove through the Smugglers' Tunnel is quiet all winter.

The sheltered side

Shaldon sits across the water from Teignmouth on the estuary rather than the open sea, which makes a real difference in December. When the Teignmouth seafront is being blasted, Shaldon is comparatively calm.

The village green

Shaldon is built around a green with the pub on it, and in December that is exactly the right shape for a village at Christmas. Everything is within a few minutes' walk.

2026 dates: switch-on evenings, markets and festive services are confirmed by councils and operators through October and November, and they move year to year. Check the organiser's own listing before travelling.

What stays open

The Smugglers' Tunnel

Ness Cove is reached through a tunnel cut down through the red cliff, which is no less exciting in December than August — and the cove is empty. Dog friendly year-round.

The ferry

The passenger ferry across to Teignmouth runs from the Back Beach. Check winter operating days before relying on it — otherwise it is a short drive round over the bridge.

Nearby

Teignmouth's sea wall is one of the best storm-watching spots in Devon, with trains passing a few feet away. Shaldon Wildlife Trust on the headland runs through the winter and does not take dogs.

Book Christmas and Boxing Day lunch in November. Devon's good pubs fill weeks ahead and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
