Seaton Flat Access: Wetlands, Trams and the Esplanade

2026-10-14·Seaton

Short answer: Seaton is one of the better east Devon towns for flat access. The wetlands have wheelchair-accessible paths and the tram stops there, and the esplanade is level the whole way. The pebble beach is the exception — pebbles defeat wheels entirely.

Seaton Wetlands

Free to enter with a £1 parking donation, and the paths are wheelchair accessible — which is stated plainly rather than implied, and holds up. There are bird hides along the route that double as shelters, and the tramway stops here, so you can arrive without using the car park at all.

The esplanade

Flat and continuous along the seafront, with the sea on one side and the town on the other. It is the easy level walk in Seaton and it goes on long enough to be a proper outing rather than a token one.

The tramway

Trams run every twenty minutes with hop-on hop-off day tickets. The open-top heritage vehicles are a century old in some cases, so step access varies — ring ahead if a wheelchair needs to board, because the answer differs by tram and by stop.

The beach is the exception

Seaton's beach is pebbles. Pebbles are unstable underfoot, impossible with wheels, and tiring with a stick. The esplanade above gives you the sea view without the surface, which is the right plan here.

Where to eat on the level

Parking that helps

Colyton's terminus has free parking and level access to the tram. If the seafront car parks are full or the walk from them is too far, starting at the other end of the line solves both problems at once.
