Rock Pooling Near Sidmouth for Kids: The Best Spots and the Tide

Short answer: Jacob's Ladder, the western beach below Connaught Gardens, has the best rock pools in Sidmouth and a gentle shelf into the water. Time it for low tide — much of the beach is submerged at high water. Stay away from the cliff base, which is genuinely unstable.

Jacob's Ladder is the spot

The western beach below Connaught Gardens, reached by a steep slope or the Grade II-listed wooden steps. Reviewers describe amazing rock pools for children to forage amongst, alongside a good stretch of sand at low tide, all set beneath the red sandstone cliffs. It is comfortably the best rock pooling in Sidmouth.

The shallow incline and sheltered setting also make it the better swimming beach of the two, and there is a café up in Connaught Gardens at the top of the slope.

The tide matters more here than anywhere

Sidmouth's beach is largely submerged at high water. Turn up at the wrong state of tide and there are no rock pools at all, just a narrow strip of large pebbles. This is the one town in this guide where checking the tide table is not optional.

Rock pooling only works on a falling tide. Aim to arrive about two hours before low water and work outwards as the sea drops — that way the pools furthest out, which nobody has disturbed, are the ones you reach last. Check the tide table before you set off rather than guessing.

A safety note that genuinely matters

The red cliffs at Sidmouth are actively unstable and there have been repeated rock falls, with sections of Jacob's Ladder beach fenced off at times and the historic steps affected. Work the pools away from the cliff base and take the signage seriously — this is not a theoretical risk here.

The pebbles

Sidmouth's shingle is made of large smooth stones weathered out of the Triassic cliffs. They are beautiful and they are awkward to walk on, so beach shoes matter more here than on a sandy beach. There is a paved promenade behind for most of the length.

What to take

• A clear plastic tub rather than a net — you can see into it and it does not damage anything.
• Beach shoes or old trainers. Barefoot on wet rock ends badly.
• A small net is fine for shrimp, but hands and patience catch more.
• Something to sit on. The best pools reward waiting rather than poking.
• Sun cream even in cloud — you will be out on open rock for an hour.

The rules

• Put every rock back exactly as you found it. That is somebody's roof.
• Look, do not lift. Anemones and limpets come off badly.
• Return everything to the pool you took it from, not a different one.
• Never turn your back on the sea, and know when the tide turns.
• Beadlet anemones can sting soft skin — fine on fingertips, not on the inside of an arm.

Beer, fifteen minutes east, is a working fishing beach under white chalk cliffs — completely different geology and worth seeing for the contrast alone. The Hooken undercliff between Beer Head and Branscombe is a landslip of chalk pinnacles and one of the more unusual bits of coast in Devon.
