Parking in Devon in Winter: What Changes and What Gets Cheaper

2026-09-27·Devon

Short answer: Winter parking is dramatically cheaper and easier. Ilfracombe drops to about £3.50 all day from 1 November. Lynton and Lynmouth's roadside becomes free entirely. And the car parks that fill by nine in August are empty.

Rates drop, and by a lot

Devon's coastal councils run summer and winter tariffs, and the difference is bigger than most visitors realise. Ilfracombe is the clearest example: around £1.60 an hour from 15 March to 31 October, dropping to about 90p an hour and £3.50 for the whole day from 1 November to 14 March.

Some restrictions lift entirely

Lynton and Lynmouth's free two-hour roadside bays operate from Good Friday to 31 October between 10am and 6pm. Outside those dates and hours there are no restrictions at all — so winter roadside parking there is simply free.

The car parks empty

This is the underrated part. Meadfoot at Torquay fills by nine on a hot morning and sits empty in January. Salcombe's car parks, which fill by lunchtime in season, have spaces. Croyde's village fields are not needed. Woolacombe's main car parks are quiet.

For anyone who has only visited Devon in August, arriving in winter and parking first time is a genuinely different experience.

What does not change

And some car parks close

Overflow car parks are seasonal. Manor Foreshore at Lynmouth opens in July and August plus about 28 busy days, and is locked at 6pm. Village overflow fields close for the winter. Check before relying on one.

Toilets close too

Worth knowing with children. Many seasonal beach toilets shut out of season, and the ones that stay open often charge 30p.

The net effect

A winter day out in Devon costs materially less than the same day in August, before you have bought anything. Ilfracombe at £3.50 for the day is the clearest example on this coast.
