Ilfracombe Parking: £3.50 All Day From November

Short answer: Parking directly outside the aquarium on the quay is the most convenient and reasonably priced option. The town beach has pay-and-display right alongside it. Both fill on summer weekends — the harbour end is where to aim first, and the walk from anywhere in Ilfracombe is short.

Ilfracombe is easier than most of this coast

Ilfracombe is a proper town rather than a beach village, and that works in your favour. There is more parking here than in Woolacombe or Croyde, it is generally cheaper, and reviewers consistently describe the prices as reasonable — which on this coast is worth saying out loud.

The harbour is where you want to be, and there is parking directly outside the aquarium on the quay. It is the best-positioned option in town: the boat trips, the Pier Tavern, the fish and chips and Verity are all within a minute of it.

The other options

Ilfracombe Beach, below the seafront, has pay-and-display immediately next to it, which is the easiest if the beach is your plan for the day. Wildersmouth is right in front of the town with shops a few steps away. Neither is far from the harbour if your first choice is full — the whole centre is walkable in ten minutes.

Park and walk instead

Two of the best spots here are better reached on foot anyway. Rapparee Cove, the sheltered swimming cove just east of the harbour, is off the coast path rather than a drive-and-park beach. Harbour Beach appears at low tide beside the quay and is about thirty seconds from a pasty.

Lee Bay, three miles west, is the quiet one and genuinely better as the destination of a walk than a drive. It is reached through fields or on the coast path, and hardly anyone is ever there.

Worth knowing

• Parking outside the aquarium is the best-placed in town.
• The town centre is walkable end to end in about ten minutes.
• Public toilets in the harbour area charge — bring 30p, contactless in places.
• Watermouth Castle and Combe Martin both have their own parking a few minutes east.

If everything central is full, the sensible move is to drive out to Watermouth or Combe Martin for a couple of hours and come back at three, when the day trippers start heading home.

Most are North Devon Council, charging 8am to 6pm every day including bank holidays. Machines take cash, card and RingGo.

• Pier EX34 9EQ — 141 spaces including 5 disabled bays, public toilets, level to the seafront and harbour. RingGo zone 3633. The obvious one for the quay.
• Cove EX34 9EE — 80 spaces, short stay, level to seafront and harbour.
• Ropery Road EX34 9EF — run by the town council, level to seafront and harbour, with EV charging.
• Wilder Road EX34 8BL — toilets and EV charging, level to the town centre.
• Jubilee Gardens EX34 9AJ and Ilfracombe Museum EX34 8AF — short stay, both level.
• Brookdale EX34 8AY and Hillsborough EX34 9QJ — long stay, and both take coaches. Hillsborough has toilets and EV charging.
• Larkstone Lane EX34 9NU — long stay, but not suitable for wheelchairs.
• Oxford Grove EX34 9HQ — cheap to reach, but a steep hill down to town.
• Hele EX34 9QZ — for Hele Beach rather than the town.

Winter parking is a third of the summer price

This is the number worth knowing. From 15 March to 31 October it is about £1.60 an hour, rising to roughly £16 for ten hours. From 1 November to 14 March it drops to about 90p for an hour, £1.80 for two — and £3.50 for the whole day.

Prices are reviewed, so treat these as a guide and check the machine. But the winter all-day rate makes Ilfracombe one of the cheapest places to leave a car on this coast between November and March.
