Exeter at Christmas: The Market

2026-08-23·Updated 23 Oct 2026·Exeter

Short answer: Exeter is Devon's Christmas city — the market on Cathedral Green, the longest Gothic vaulted ceiling in England above it, free Red Coat walking tours and medieval underground passages when it rains.

The 2026 dates

The Christmas market on Cathedral Green runs from 13 November to 13 December, the longest in Devon. The Westpoint Christmas Shopping Fayre follows on 27 to 29 November, with free parking.

Checked against the organisers' listings in late October. Smaller events are run by volunteers and can move, so confirm before travelling.

Devon's Christmas city

If you want a proper Christmas market in Devon rather than a row of stalls in a wet square, Exeter is the answer. The market sits on Cathedral Green with the cathedral behind it, which is about as good a setting as England offers.

2026 dates: switch-on evenings, markets and festive services are confirmed by councils and operators through October and November, and they move year to year. Check the organiser's own listing before travelling.

The cathedral

The longest uninterrupted Gothic vaulted ceiling in England, an astronomical clock and carols through December. Worth going in rather than only looking at it from the market.

The weatherproof half

Exeter is the one place in this guide where a day out is entirely weatherproof, which in December matters more than in July.

The Quay

Converted riverside warehouses with quirky shops and cafés on both banks. Quieter than the high street and pleasant on a cold bright afternoon.

Getting here

Exeter is the rail hub for the whole county, which makes it the easiest Christmas shopping trip in Devon without a car — and it saves parking in a city centre in December.

Nearby

The Dartmoor Line runs from Exeter to Okehampton for the moor. Exmouth is at the end of the Avocet Line, twenty-five minutes away, with two miles of flat promenade.

Book Christmas and Boxing Day lunch in November. Devon's good pubs fill weeks ahead and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
