Short answer: Okehampton sits at the foot of the highest ground on Dartmoor, so the walking is the draw. The London Inn and the Plume of Feathers both welcome dogs, and the Dartmoor Line means you can arrive by train.
Okehampton is the gateway to the highest, wildest part of Dartmoor — High Willhays and Yes Tor, the highest ground in southern England. For a dog that wants a proper walk rather than a stroll along a promenade, there is nothing better in Devon.
Free and vast. But treat it seriously: check the military firing times before going up, take a map, and keep dogs under close control around livestock and ground-nesting birds.
Brothers is the best cooking in Okehampton but is not listed as dog friendly — save it for an evening out.
The Dartmoor Line runs from Exeter, and a second station, Okehampton Interchange, opened on 1 August 2026 with a 200-space car park. The original station has the National Park information centre and a café. Dogs travel on GWR services; check their current policy before you book.
