Dogs at Coleton Fishacre: Garden, Shop and Café

2026-03-30·Devon

Short answer: Yes. Coleton Fishacre is a three-pawprint National Trust property, the Trust's top rating. Dogs on leads are welcome in the garden, the shop and Café Coleton. The house is assistance dogs only.

The short answer

Yes, and generously. The National Trust rates Coleton Fishacre three pawprints — its top tier — and dogs on leads are welcome across the garden, in the shop and in Café Coleton. Only the house itself is restricted, to assistance dogs.

That café detail matters. At many historic properties the dog-friendly bit ends at the café door, which leaves someone standing outside with a cup of tea. Here you can all sit down together.

What you get

A 1920s country retreat built for the D'Oyly Carte family, with a subtropical terraced garden running down a valley to the sea on the Kingswear peninsula. Woodland paths, viewpoints over the coast and a second-hand bookshop in the Seemly Hut on the terrace.

The grounds are only partly accessible — steep slopes and narrow paths — though there is a mapped accessible route and an all-terrain Tramper available to hire.

Nearby with a dog

The South West Coast Path runs along the edge of the estate, and the Coleton circular walk via Coleton Camp is a proper coastal loop. Kingswear and the Dartmouth ferry are minutes away, and Dartmouth itself is one of the most dog-friendly towns in Devon — Café Alf Resco, Dudley's and the Sail Loft all take dogs.

Dartmouth Castle, across the river, also welcomes dogs on leads.

Checked against the attraction's own published policy in September 2026. Dog rules change — ring ahead if you are driving any distance.
