Bovey Tracey at Christmas: What's Open

2026-08-13·Updated 23 Oct 2026·Bovey Tracey

Short answer: Bovey Tracey is the gateway to the eastern moor, and in December the woodland is the sheltered option when the high moor is not. Ullacombe Farm has indoor seating and animals to feed; Home Farm Café at Parke is on the edge of town.

The 2026 dates

Bovey Tracey's lights switch-on had not been dated when this was checked in late October. It is held on Fore Street. Moretonhampstead switches on in The Square on Saturday 28 November.

Checked against the organisers' listings in late October. Smaller events are run by volunteers and can move, so confirm before travelling.

The gateway to the moor

Bovey Tracey sits on the eastern edge of Dartmoor and is the last proper town before the high ground. In December that position is useful: the woodland below the moor is sheltered when the tops are not.

Woodland rather than moorland

East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve at Yarner Wood is ancient woodland with a river and grassy glades, and four car parks. Trees give more shelter than you expect, and the walking is easier underfoot than open moor in winter.

Wistman's Wood, further out on the high moor, is one of the last temperate rainforests in England — stunted oaks covered in moss. It is extraordinary in winter mist, but it is a proper moorland walk, so go prepared.

What stays open

The waterfalls

Becky Falls and Canonteign Falls are both nearby and both better after rain, which December provides. Check winter opening before driving out — several Dartmoor attractions reduce hours or close entirely between January and February.

2026 dates: switch-on evenings, markets and festive services are confirmed by councils and operators through October and November, and they move year to year. Check the organiser's own listing before travelling.

A moorland warning that matters in winter

Dartmoor weather changes fast, the light goes by four, and the roads are unfenced with livestock and ponies on them. Bellever Forest is the sheltered option if the tops look unwise — forestry tracks, a shallow river and wild ponies, with toilets and a coffee trailer.

Book Christmas and Boxing Day lunch in November. Devon's good pubs fill weeks ahead and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
