Barnstaple at Christmas: What's Open

2026-08-10·Updated 23 Oct 2026·Barnstaple

Short answer: Barnstaple is where north Devon does its Christmas shopping. The Pannier Market is a covered Victorian hall running Tuesday to Saturday, the museum is free, and the train from Exeter means you can skip parking entirely.

The 2026 dates

Barnstaple's lights switch-on had not been dated when this was checked in late October. It is held on The Strand and at the Pannier Market.

Checked against the organisers' listings in late October. Smaller events are run by volunteers and can move, so confirm before travelling.

North Devon's Christmas town

Barnstaple is the region's main town and it is where everyone comes in December — for the shops, the market and the lights. It has more under cover than the whole north coast put together, which in a Devon winter is the point.

The Pannier Market

A huge covered Victorian hall in the centre, running Tuesday to Saturday with independent stalls. It is properly indoors, dog friendly and wheelchair accessible, and in December it is the best hour in town when it is raining.

The lights

The high street and the square carry them, with the Long Bridge over the Taw alongside. The bridge is medieval and much quieter now that through traffic uses the bypass.

2026 dates: switch-on evenings and market dates are confirmed by town councils and organisers through October and November, and they move year to year. Check the town council or chamber of commerce listing before travelling rather than relying on last year's date.

What stays open

Arrive by train

Barnstaple is the end of the Tarka Line from Exeter. On a dark December Saturday, that beats finding a parking space — and the Tarka Trail starts at the station if you want air afterwards.

Book Christmas and Boxing Day lunch in November. Devon's good pubs fill weeks ahead and the ones that do not take bookings have queues instead.
